About this deal

Two of his plays, ‘Hard to Swallow’ and ‘Missing Dan Nolan’, have been set texts on two out of four of the GCSE drama (9-1) specifications from 2016- 2023. Through this powerful verbatim performance they witness the joyful life and tragic death of Dan Spargo-Mabbs, and see how devastating the loss of a young life is for the family, friends and the wider community.

He took eighteen months developing the script and performance with Oasis Youth Theatre, based in Southampton. The hoodie symbolising Dan was such an amazing concept to show everyone had a part of Dan in them and they were also a part of him and… Dan could be anyone. When Dan, a sixteen year old boy loses his life under sad circumstances it is nothing short of a tragedy.

Sean Radford gives a moving performance as Jack, Dan’s best friend, as well as Jacob, Dan’s brother. This is thanks to its widespread appeal in schools and colleges since the very start, as well as the continuing popularity of our Theatre in Education touring productions. There are interesting parallels to be drawn with the verbatim play/film, The Laramie Project, and examining the director's methods in engaging the audience through music and visual imagery. Schools where students are studying or performing the play are able to book a conversation online with Fiona, and prepare questions to help them understand the story, the people, and the process behind the making of the play. I hadn’t realised how much scope for creativity there was with a play taken completely from other people’s words.

Although it is similar in themes to his other works, it's a very literal piece – the way in which the words of real-life friends and family are crafted into the text makes it so eloquent and beautiful. There’s also links to the foundation set up in Daniel’s memory, ran by Fiona (his Mum) please take a look and see the work they are doing. The Foundation has also funded and coordinated a professional tour of London schools, colleges and communities as a Theatre in Education production since 2017, recently attracting Arts Council funding for its fourth professional tour this Spring. Don’t miss Mark Wheeller’s beautifully-written play and Octopus Dream’s acclaimed production, touring to theatres across the country for the first time.

I Love You, Mum - I Promise I Won't Die’ is a verbatim play by award-winning playwright Mark Wheeller, using the words of Dan’s family and friends to tell his story. We’re delighted that from September 2022 the play will be one of seven set texts on the Eduqas GCSE drama syllabus, alongside Shakespeare, JB Priestly, Malorie Blackman and Benjamin Zephaniah. Amy Zoldan demonstrates incredible versatility as she glides from drama teacher to immature teenager to deeply in love girlfriend. Conversations after seeing a play like this let the audience into the decision making process, problem solving and understanding the consequences.During Spring 2022 ‘I Love You, Mum’ was performed for the 500 th time, an incredible achievement in just five years since publication. Everyone loves Dan and at 16, he has plans, plenty of them – just losing his life isn’t one of them. While I Love You, Mum is ostensibly seen as a Theatrein-Education (TIE) play, Mark Wheeller describes it as first and foremost ‘verbatim’. Delving into the intricacies of language or historical content in a text has its merits, but Drama teachers are notoriously short of time. I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Dietells the tragic true story of the death of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs following an MDMA overdose.

Touring for 8 -10 weeks around Central and Southern England, this year is our 4th year and the 7th professional tour around London, Central and the South East. That fateful evening is told through the words of his school friends and family, divided into two hard-hitting acts in Mark Wheeller's verbatim play. Sean Radford gives an outsider’s view of the events of that night as Jack who turned down drugs and – to his eternal shame – refused to ride in the ambulance.
